Will McNicol

Will McNicol will be making a welcome fourth visit to La Fontenelle to lead a four-day workshop in April.  Having picked up his first guitar at the age of six, Will has gone on to become Guitarist Magazine’s UK Acoustic Guitarist of the Year (2011) and one of Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s 30 Great Guitarists Under 30 from around the world (2014). He holds Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship diplomas with Trinity College London in Classical Guitar Recital and has released four critically acclaimed albums of original material. His most recent album, Dragonflies, Frogs and Bumblebees was produced by acoustic guitar legend Clive Carroll, and received 5-star reviews from the music press.

“At once soothing and uplifting…exceptional”

Will has performed relentlessly throughout his career and has given concerts up and down the UK and abroad. Whether it be headlining his own solo shows, performing at festivals, or supporting world-renowned artists such as Pierre Bensusan, Clive Carroll, Jon Gomm, Martin Simpson and Mumford and Sons amongst others, his performances have been described as “beautifully flawless” and “magical” by the music press. Having toured, performed, workshopped and given masterclasses in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Zimbabwe and China, Will has also made appearances including multiple concerts and workshops at one of Africa’s biggest music festivals – The Harare International Festival of Arts.

As a composer, Will’s music is influenced by styles from all over the world, and has extended beyond just solo guitar composition. His orchestral works have been debuted by the UK’s Ten Tors Orchestra and his guitar pieces have been used for various media projects including BBC Radio 4 documentaries. Will has been commissioned to write everything from incidental music for film and dance through to tuition pieces for beginners and has published three notation books to accompany his most recent albums.

“acoustic genius…a true guitar ninja”

Also an in-demand tutor, Will has given workshops and masterclasses at festivals including The Ullapool Guitar Festival and has led the International Guitar Festival’s esteemed Advanced Fingerstyle Course. He has worked alongside some of the finest guitar educators in workshop environments and has run the London Guitar Summit’s Contemporary Acoustic Course alongside the world-renowned acoustic guitarist Antonio Forcione. Will has produced educational videos for MusicRadar’s Acoustic Expo along with material for Imagine Publishing’s Guitar for Beginner’s series, and written articles for Guitar Techniques Magazine.

“one of the finest guitarists and composers on the scene today”

Tristan Seume

Tristan Seume returns once again this August for his annual four-day acoustic guitar workshop in the beautiful setting of La Fontenelle.

Tristan’s workshop will focus on topics such as the following:

  • Celtic fingerstyle guitar
  • Arranging songs for solo guitar
  • Open / altered tunings
  • Useful associated theory and techniques

Acclaimed as one of the UK’s leading acoustic guitarists, Tristan has toured all over Europe both as a soloist and a sought-after accompanist.  His solo albums, You Just Know and Middle Child, both available online, mix handcrafted originals with beautiful interpretations of traditional and contemporary tunes.  As an in-demand a side-man, he has played hundreds of shows accompanying some of the foremost voices on the UK folk scene, including Jackie Oates, Daria Kulesh and Lisa Knapp.

An experienced and enthusiastic educator, his CV includes countless contributions to some of the UK’s best-selling guitar magazines; Guitar Techniques, Total Guitar, Acoustic, and notably, over 130 consecutive monthly guitar tutorials spanning more than a decade of issues of Guitarist Magazine.

He has led workshops at many events such as Halsway Manor Guitar Week (National Centre for Folk Arts), Bath International Guitar Festival and the now-legendary Ullapool Guitar Festival.

Tristan is also a freelance arranger and transcriber whose clients include RSL Awards (Rock School graded acoustic guitar syllabus), the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) and DIME ONLINE.

“Seume’s superb fingerpicking talent and ease of drifting between styles drives you to a state of listening compulsion” – Acoustic Magazine

“I believe he is one of the finest of [his] acoustic generation” – Acoustic guitar legend, Gordon Giltrap

Workshop details and how to apply

Whilst the course caters for varying abilities, it is recommended that participants have a good grasp of acoustic guitar basics (standard chord shapes and a few fingerstyle patterns) to gain the maximum benefit from this experience, and each course will end with an informal concert in front of a small invited audience.

The cost of the 4-day workshop is £275 which includes tuition fees, lunches, refreshments and a welcome meal on the first night.

Spaces for each workshop are limited to 8 participants, so please book early to avoid disappointment.  Participants are expected to organise their own travel and you should aim to arrive on the Tuesday before the course begins and leave on the Sunday after the final day.  If you book early, we can arrange some reasonably priced B & B accommodation in the course venue and in other houses in La Fontenelle, but see the logistics page for alternative suggestions.  There is a restaurant in the village and meals can be booked in advance.
